Welcome to Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do
Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do is one of the oldest and most respected systems of Okinawan karate. At Daibudō Kodenkan Matsuno Kenshūkai in Tucson, we teach the Matsumura Seito-Ha tradition. This approach emphasizes natural movement, explosive speed, balance, and strong fundamentals rooted in classical training.
The Heart of Traditional Karate
Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do balances power and precision through disciplined practice of kihon (basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring). Each class develops the body, mind, and spirit through structured training. As a result, students gain practical self defense skills while also building discipline, awareness, and respect.
This traditional approach preserves Okinawan karate as a complete martial art. It does not focus solely on sport or competition.
What You Will Learn
Students training in Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do Matsumura Seito-Ha learn core techniques and principles in a structured way. Training progresses step by step and includes:
- Foundational strikes, blocks, and kicks
- Classical kata such as Seisan, Passai, and related forms
- Bunkai, which applies kata techniques in practical situations
- Partner drills and controlled sparring
- Breathing methods, timing, posture, and body control
Over time, students build strong fundamentals before moving on to advanced material.
Class Structure and Teaching Approach
Shorin-Ryu Karate classes are beginner friendly and open to youth and adults of all experience levels. Instructors guide students directly through hands-on instruction. For this reason, students progress at their own pace while maintaining technical accuracy and respect for tradition.
Classes emphasize safety, proper mechanics, and long-term development rather than quick advancement.

Our Lineage and Tradition
Our Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do instruction follows the Matsumura Seito-Ha lineage. It also reflects shared values through our connection to the Kodenkan Yudanshakai and the Holck Family in our Danzan-Ryu Jujitsu training.
This combination of Okinawan karate and Japanese jujutsu provides a well-rounded martial education grounded in history, integrity, and purpose. The Matsumura Seito-Ha tradition traces its roots to Matsumura Sokon, a key figure in the development of Okinawan karate.
